A whole load of questions
I just got started with Debian last night. Installation went relatively
painless [a little partition issue that was quickly solved with the wonders
of tar].
Anyway. My current situation is that I have a Micros**t Win95 system with
a cable modem. My intent for my new Linux box is to get an Ethernet card
[sitting on my desk next to me] installed and connected to the Win95
system [adding routes to go directly to each other instead of out the
cable modem and getting lost]. What I'd like to do is to use NFS to
mount some of the Linux directories on the Win95 system, so that I can
download packages from the net and deposit them on the linux system.
Eventually I'll look into masquerading, but I want to just get something
quick and easy so that I don't have to sneaker-net the packages over.
Comments on a better idea would be appreciated.
Now for the questions [I've been digging around for answers all day, if
these answers are out there.. please point me in the right direction!].
- I tried to install the man-db package but it failed. I think I missed
a prereq package, but I'm not positive [now that I know about dpkg -i
I'll try that tonight and see what happens]. However, I was unable to
see the error messages because they flew by too fast. So the first
question is... is there any sort of scrollback buffer without X?
- non 8.3 filenames. I'm guessing that the reason I didn't see the
long filenames on the disks that I copied packages onto was because
I didn't mount with 'mount -t vfat'. Is that all I'll need, or do
I need another package to prevent having to copy all the packages
into a temp directory and renaming them back to their original names?
- When I plug in my ethernet card [3Com 3C509] do I need to rebuild the
kernel to get the new driver activated?
- Is there any way to SneakerNet larger Packages via 1.44 floppy from
Win95 to Linux? I know WinZip on Win95 will span disks, but I don't
think I'd be able to get it on the other side. Is there any way better
than uuencoding the package and breaking it up into disk-sized chunks?
- <alt> <f1> [etc] gets to the different virtual terminals, but I saw
mention there was 64.. how do I get to the other 52?
Any answers or pointers to answers would be greatly appreciated! I'm
sure I've got more questions, I've just forgotten them all :)
