Or, since pppd is a bit stupid and sometimes issues this error when it
isn't true, there's a stale lock file in /var/lock or something else
is using the modem. Check that:
1) There are no minicom sessions running on other terminals - you've
exited all of them, yes?
2) There are no files in /var/lock that are named something like
LCK..cua1, LCK..ttyS1 or LCK..modem. If there are, delete them.
