No, just bad wording when trying to be brief. :-(

I'm refering to 16 bit colour being 2^16=65536 colours and 2^24=16777216
colours. And I meant to type 24_bit_ colour JPEG.

The other replies seem to say that it's no suprise that the eye doesn't
see the difference. I'll try the gimp gradients; that sounds like an
interesting test.
