My comments about the Exabyte are consistent with comments by

I don't give the web page because it is excessively long, but go to Mylex's

and search on exabyte for their single entry on "tape drive errors in Linux".
Their solution involves putting older firmware onto their BT-958 and
other adapter cards. Perhaps your older firmware didn't have the problems
that Buslogic's newer firmware has.
