No.  Linux (therefore Debian),  like all Unix operating systems,  needs to
be shut off with the "shutdown" command.  Linux is stable enough that you
really don't need to turn it off unless you're trying to save power ...

at any rate,  to shut the system off,  become root (use the "su" command),
and type "shutdown -h now" which means "shutdown the computer,  and halt
it,  NOW." ... then you'll get some messages printed on the screen while
stuff happens,  and you'll see "System halted".  At this point,  you can
turn off the power.
