I would install kernel-package.deb and use this one for kernel
compilation. It has many features I wouldn't want to miss. Basicaly it 
creates a debian package of your custom kernel.

Regarding ppa. Did you try modprobe ppa ? The ppa module need a low
level SCSI module to be loaded first IIRC.
