Ummm, what's wrong with

dpkg-source -x packagename.dsc
cd packagename
dpkg-buildpackage
cd ..
dpkg -i packagename.deb

I think you don't even have to be root if you use the fake-root package,
whatever that is.

I used to use debian/rules build, until someone pointed out the
dpkg-buildpackage command to me.
