dhcp lost track

I run a fairly straight forward Debian 2.0 box, configured as a gateway
between a cable modem (eth0) and a small lan (eth1). I have installed dhcp
server on eth1, so I can use my office laptop on the lan without having to
change half a dozen Win95 settings on the laptop. This all used to work
nicely, until just yesterday my laptop no longer received its ip number.
My daemon starts up nicely (from /var/log/daemon):

> Nov 24 16:02:04 souterrain dhcpd: Internet Software Consortium DHCPD
$Name: V2-BETA-1-PATCHLEVEL-6 $
> Nov 24 16:02:04 souterrain dhcpd: Copyright 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 The
Internet Software Consortium.
> Nov 24 16:02:04 souterrain dhcpd: All rights reserved.
> Nov 24 16:02:04 souterrain dhcpd: Listening on Socket/eth1/192.168.1.0
> Nov 24 16:02:04 souterrain dhcpd: Sending on Socket/eth1/192.168.1.0

In the old days, when things used to work, my log would show entries like:

> Nov 23 20:40:15 souterrain dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from 00:60:97:ed:42:2d via
eth1
> Nov 23 20:40:16 souterrain dhcpd: DHCPOFFER on 192.168.1.126 to
00:60:97:ed:42:2d via eth1
> Nov 23 20:40:16 souterrain dhcpd: DHCPREQUEST for 192.168.1.126 from
00:60:97:ed:42:2d via eth1
> Nov 23 20:40:16 souterrain dhcpd: DHCPACK on 192.168.1.126 to
00:60:97:ed:42:2d via eth1

Now I find nasty things as:

> Nov 25 07:22:02 souterrain dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from 00:60:97:ed:42:2d via
eth1
> Nov 25 07:22:03 souterrain dhcpd: DHCPOFFER on 192.168.1.126 to
00:60:97:ed:42:2d via eth1
> Nov 25 07:22:03 souterrain dhcpd: sendpkt: Network is unreachable

Have not touched my dhcp.conf file. I did do a reboot since it last worked,
but can not think of a reason for that stopping the job. The 'Network is
unreachable' indicates cable problems, maybe. But is I do change the laptop
to using a fixed ip, all works well. There is communication going on anyway,
the log file shows.
I am lost, if someone has any idea where to go and exploit, I will be
grateful.
