installation trouble

I am trying to install Debian on a machine that had NT on it. I made a
rescue disk (resc1440.bin), but when I boot with it, I get errors related
to the SCSI controller. The machine loops indefinitely with this message:

(scsi:-1:-1:-1) Bad scbptr 16 during SELTO
(scsi:-1:-1:-1) Referenced SCB 255 not valid during SELTO.
	SCSISEQ = 0x5a SEQADDR = 0x8 SSTAT0 = 0x15 SSTAT1 = 0x8a

The machine has an Adaptec 2940 controller, so I tried the boot
parameter "aic7xxx=no_reset". This suppresses the above error, but I just
end up with:

Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 01:00

What should I do?
