How will it deal with a net.split?

Wouldn't it be simpler to ssh to the machine? That'd allow people
from incompatible machines to submit jobs. (Or even via the web!)

That's up to the supercomputer admin. Eg if the nodes are the desktop
machines at one company, it can set any policy it likes.
