RE: lilo - booting from a device



I don't know the answer to your question, but I've got an alternative   
approach.

Mount the boot partition of the new distribution:

 mount /dev/hda1 /mnt

Then add the following stanza (it's based on your entry below)
to lilo.conf:

image=/mnt/vmlinuz
 label=newdistro
 root=/dev/hda12

Then lilo will figure out the sector to file mapping for you.
