There shouldn't be a "." in your PATH; even at the end, it's a
security risk. Use
./foo
instead. Really, it's very easy to get into the habit and it improves
your security. It used to be the case that people put "." in their
PATH as a matter of course, but the practice died out when people
started to worry about the security implications.
I'm surprised that you say no-one else said this...
