Emacs woes

Dear all,

I get this trying to --configure emacs 19:

warning: /usr/man/man1/emacs.1.gz is supposed to be a slave symlink to
/etc/alternatives/emacs.1.gz, or nonexistent; however, readlink failed:
Invalid argument
Leaving emacs.1.gz (/usr/man/man1/emacs.1.gz) pointing to
/usr/man/man1/emacs.1emacs20.gz.
Update-menus: waiting for dpkg to finish(forking to background)

install/gnus: byte-compiling for emacs19
Cannot open load file: /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/custom-init.el
emacs-install: /usr/lib/emacsen-common/packages/install/gnus emacs19

dpkg: error processing emacs19 (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 29

It's pretty much a vanilla system, so what's the problem (and how do I
correct it)

Thanks,

Matthew
