Diagnostic software for hardware

I suspect some parts of my hardware may be suspect. I have run memtest
but that did not report any problems.

I get unexpected signals about my cdrom, a lot of signal 11's while trying
to compile a kernel, more than usual segmentation faults and X bombing out
to many times for my liking.

I have a 486 DX 40 with 24 meg ram and two IDE hard drives (1.6 Gig and
540 meg), a CDROM, IOMEGA Ditto 2GB tape drive (which I do not use with
ftape any more because it is unreliable in combination with ftape), a
handheld scanner and a second serial card to provide a fast serial port
for my external modem.

What other diagnostic software can I use to determine what is wrong?

"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of
God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice,
holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable
service. And be not conformed to this world; but be ye
transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may
prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect,
      will of God." Romans 12:1,2
