See http://atrey.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/~vojtech/joystick/  I use it with
the 2.0.35 kernel but it also works with the 2.1.x series.  You can
compile as add on modules or directly into the kernel.  Not alot off
apps are joystick aware but there are a few that make the joystick act
like keyboard input.
