I strongly suspect this a kernel-related problem, since the printing
is slow even when doing 'cat file >/dev/lp1'.
Or maybe you have confused /dev/lp1 with /dev/lp0?

Try another kernel (an make sure to update the modules and
install them (2.0.33 worked fine for me)).
