Syncing the disks is not the same as marking them as clean (e2fsck will
check the clean flag to decide if to check or not). Syncing just ensures
that the cache is cleared, so all changes made in the cache are written
to disk, this minimalizes data loss.

You can try /var/log/*, especially kernel.log and syslog, but it did not
help me, I only found some binary trash.
