Yes.  Absolutely.  With minicom I do the entire login manually including
the last step of entering ppp.  My ISP tells me that I have established
a connection and dislays my IP address.  Then I see this stuff:

~~y}#.!}!V} }4}"}&} }*} } }%}&.}+.a}'}"}(}"aY~~y}#.!}!W} }4}"}&} }*} } }

scrolling across my screen and I exit minicom without resetting the modem.

I then immediately execute the pppd command.

This is the same procedure which always worked with Debian 1.3.1.
I'm doing it exactly the same way.
