Under XEmacs from Deb2.0 I had to configure it on the "options" menu.
I also created a file called .Xresources on my $HOME dir with this:

Emacs*Font: -*-Courier-Bold-R-*-*-*-180-*-*-*-*-*-*
Emacs*EmacsFrame.geometry: =80x60-0+0
Emacs*Background: WhiteSmoke
