audio problem

I've re-built 2.0.34 to support sound and installed bplay 
and splay and installed rvplayer.  When I
bplay /usr/lib/exmh/clink.au
it responds with 
bplay: /dev/dsp: Device not configured
ls -l /dev/dsp
83698 crw-rw-rw-  1 root     audio    14,   20 May 19  1997 dsp

many other device 14, devices are also present.  Also
cat /usr/lib/exmh/clink.au >/dev/audio
ksh: cannot create /dev/audio: No such device or address
ls -l /dev/audio
83699 crw-rw----  1 root    audio    14, 4,   4 May 19  1997 audio

I'm perplexed.  Can anyone provide a clue?
