Perl and locale question

Can someone please help this Perl-ignoramus with the following.
I keep on getting, if logged in as user or suid root (and running 2.0
and 2.0.34):

perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings
		LC_ALL (unset)
		LANG = ("us")
are supported and installed on your system
Falling back to the standard locale ("C")
perl: warning: Setting locale failed

Where/how does one set the above, and what should LC_ALL be set to?
LANG on this system is "uk", so that should be simple if I knew where
to change it.

Thanks for all help.
