You can try this:

Tell me which Debian version you're running (hamm,  bo,  or by number --
1.2,  1.3,  2.0).  I'll send you a copy of the MAKEDEV script which
belongs in /dev ... put it there and run (as root) 
MAKEDEV update
it'll try to read from /proc,  identify relevant devices and build their
/dev entries.
