You'll need to recompile the kernel. It's not difficult at all ... just
(in x) cd /usr/src/linux and "make xconfig" ... find the sound options and
enter the correct parameters.
I'd recommend you to read the "kernel howto" and the "sound howto" at
http://www.linux.org/help/howto.html
