Kernel logging has stopped

Until May 6, my bootup messages were logged in /var/log/kern and
/var/log/messages. Since then only ppp messages are logged in these
files. I am running hamm, updated through yesterday. I have a
/var/lib/dpkg/status.yesterday.1.gz dated May 8, and
/var/lib/dpkg/status.yesterday.2.gz dated May 4.

Packages sysvinit and sysklogd were among the packages updated
between those dates. /etc/syslog.conf hasn't changed since April 6,
however.

Can anyone suggest where I should look to fix the logging?

Bob
