URGENT: Problems with bash_2.01.1-1_i386.deb pkg.

** Confidential **

Greetings --

First off, I know I shouldn't have done it...
Now-- I tried to upgrade bash from hamm (I used to have bash_2.01-5.deb from hamm way back in January of 1998) to the newest bash_2.01.1-1_i386.deb from ftp1.us.debian.org last night.
The upgrade didn't go well, and now I'm stuck with no capability to do much of the things: I can't log in as a user or as a root (I'm still logged in as a root on one VC and that one sort of works). I tried downgrading to my original hamm bash package, but I can' mount a floppy anymore- it says that fs type msdos is not supported- and insmod by hand gives me a three lines of "unresolved symbols". Soooo, is there anything I can do in the console I'm still logged in or should I just reinstall the whole damn thing?
My system info (system was working fine for three full months...):
kernel 2.0.33 custom compiled
dpkg_1.4.0.21
libc6_2.06 (I think, I'm not home now...)
old bash 2.01-5 and corresponding libreadline
ncurses3.4_1.9.9 from hamm

dpkg -install output:
.
dpkg: warning - old pre-removal script killed by signal (Seg fault), core dumped
dpkg - trying script from the new package instead...
dpkg: error processing bash_2.01.1-1_i386.deb (--install): subprocess new pre-removalscript killed by signal (Seg fault), core dumped
dpkg: error while cleaning up: subprocess post instalation script killed by signal (Seg fault), core dumped
Errors were encountered while processing: bash_2.01.1-1_i386.deb

dpkg --status partiall output:

installed OK half-configured
configure-version: 2.01-5
