kernel-package instructions questions

hello-

i've started to use kernel-package and have a few questions.

  1) after doing a make config (or menuconfig, etc.), there is
some mention on the screen about doing:

       make dep; make clean

however, in the kernel-package docs, the next step after doing a
     make config is:

        make-kpkg clean

(i think). so, should i do a 'make dep; make clean', or not?

also, should i do a 'make mrproper' before doing a 'make config'?
if i missed something in the kernel-package docs, please let me know :-)

  2) i've successfully made custom kernels for machines w/o pcmcia
slots, but i haven't had success when i try to get pcmcia support
working. i realize there is a separate package for pcmcia support
(actually was it two more packages?) does someone have some hints
somewhere i can have a look at or a description of how pcmcia support
is supposed to work? (wouldn't it be nice for it to be integrated
into the kernel? is this the case for 2.1.x?)
