First, we need to know where it comes from:
$ which ar
/usr/bin/ar
$ dpkg -S /usr/bin/ar
binutils: /usr/bin/ar
So "ar" is part of the binutils package.
Current (hamm) binutils source is in
hamm/hamm/source/devel/binutils_*
(relative to any Debian FTP mirror)
