I had a similar experience when I installed the debian-packed gimp.
I had compiled gimp myself and installed under /usr/local/ previously and
did not remove all gtk-libs there by mistake. Maybe this is the case at your
machine, too. Make sure you (or dpkg?) have removed all old libraries.
