heres the trick with getting a plug and play network card going on your
Linux box. its a little bit down and dirty but it works really good.
first, get a dos boot disk and boot your computer from floppy.
then use the installation disk supplied with the NE2000 card.
you should have a couple of options in there to change the card from
plug-'n play to standard or Dos mode.
goto the non plug-'n play mode. 
it should ask you for some addresses to set the card to.
I like to use the x300 and 10 for the base memory and IRQ, they are usually
open on most machines unless you have a scsi card on that address, then you
will have to use something else.

exit the software and WRITE the new settings to the card. (should be
automatic)
reboot to linux:
add the modprobe ne2000 x300 command to your bootfile and reboot again..
should work nicely if there arent any conflicts.
and it is pretty quick and easy to do.
