Make sure that, in /etc/X11/config, this line:

no-start-xdm

is changed to:

start-xdm

Also, make sure that in /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers there is a line like this:

:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X

Then, if startx works for you, you will get the xdm login screen at boot
time. You can get it immediately by running this as root:

/etc/init.d/xdm start
