Xdm, utmp, who and finger

Users who are logged onto my machine in X on the console (running xdm)
don't have a utmp (or wtmp?) entry -- they don't show up in "who" listings
and "finger user" shows
"last logged in (sometime) "
rather than "on since (sometime)".

Is this normal?
