If you are using the deb package, there is a perl script:

/usr/doc/amd/examples/automount2amd.pl

which converts automount-style maps automatically. I added the execution
of this script into /var/yp/Makefile on my NIS master, so that the
auto.home maps is automatically converted and pushed out when the rest if
the NIS databases are made.
