X cannot find mouse (new installation)

Hello.

I created a new Debian system last night, downloading 'stable' from
ftp.debian.org. In trying to run XFree86, I get this server error
message:

Fatal server error:
Cannot open mouse (No such file or directory)

I cannot figure this out, becase I was using the same /etc/X11/XF86Config
file I was using in my old system. Instead of /dev/cua0 for the mouse,
I tried tty00 (the way the port shows up in dmesg) but still no joy.

Can anyone suggest how I might fix this?

Thanks!
-Ken
