I too have been having trouble connecting to ftp.us.debian.org.
When I try to ftp there, I get the following:

Connected to santanni.cc.gatech.edu.
220 santanni.cc.gatech.edu FTP server (Version wu-2.4.2-academ[BETA-15](1) Tue Oct 7 12:46:13 EDT 1997) ready.

and then it hangs. Nothing happens. Is the FTP server down?
