 Hmm. Does AWE have an OPL chip? I haven't at least compiled that to my kernel and
 everything is working fine.

 Here's mine - I'm using plain default SB settings:

Sound Driver:3.5.4-960630 (Sun Aug 31 14:30:14 EEST 1997 root,
Linux lonesome 2.0.29 #1 Mon May 26 09:25:51 EST 1997 i686 unknown)
Kernel: Linux lonesome 2.0.31 #4 Sun Aug 31 14:36:34 EEST 1997 i686
Config options: 0

Installed drivers:
Type 2: Sound Blaster
Type 7: SB MPU-401

Card config:
Sound Blaster at 0x220 irq 5 drq 1,5
(SB MPU-401 irq 1 drq 0)

Audio devices:
0: Sound Blaster 16 (4.16)

Synth devices:
0: AWE32-0.4.1e (RAM4096k)

Midi devices:

Timers:
0: System clock

Mixers:
0: Sound Blaster
1: AWE32 Equalizer

 Ahh! No AWE driver ! Get the latest from "http://bahamut.mm.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp/~iwai/awedrv/";
 and compile your kernel again.

 And here's a snipped version of .config from my kernel-sources that I've been using (2.0.30+
 pre-patch 7 etc.):

CONFIG_SOUND=m
# CONFIG_PAS is not set
CONFIG_SB=y
CONFIG_AUDIO=y
CONFIG_MIDI=y
# CONFIG_YM3812 is not set
SBC_BASE=220
SBC_IRQ=5
SBC_DMA=1
SB_DMA2=5
SB_MPU_BASE=0
SB_MPU_IRQ=-1
DSP_BUFFSIZE=65536
CONFIG_LOWLEVEL_SOUND=y
# CONFIG_ACI_MIXER is not set
CONFIG_AWE32_SYNTH=y#
