Strange.. on my box:

$dpkg -S kerneld
..
modutils: /sbin/kerneld
modutils: /etc/init.d/kerneld
..

Could you check if these files do actually exist on your system? (What is
in your /etc/init.d/kerneld? mine is in fact empty.)
If not, doing "touch /etc/init.d/kerneld" and then retrying "dpkg -i
modutils_2.1.34-5.deb" might solve your problem.

If it still doesn't work, (lame answer follows:) look at the scripts 
/var/lib/dpkg/info/modutils* and see if you can figure out what goes
wrong. You'll learn a lot about the intricacies of your favorite linux
distribution ;-)
