[OFF-TOPIC] RCA key cracking contest

Hi Everyone.

Firstly, let me apologise for this off-topic message, it's not really Debian
related but it can be run on your Debian system. (Remember Mike, you said
you're not stopping me.... :-)

Some members of the Debian team have gotten together to help crack the
cryptographic contest called "The RSA Data Security Secret-Key Challenge".
The goal of cracking this key is to test the government endorsed encryption
standard called DES. The data received from this contest will assist
researchers and developers in new encryption techniques.

To assist us in this contest, please download the software for your OS
(Debian specific or otherwise) from:
                               ftp://portal.stwing.upenn.edu/pub/rc5

Most OS platforms are supported, including Windows{95,NT}. Please take note
though, the contest started with an estimated completion time of 8 years (!)
it's now just over 5 and decreasing - with more sites joining, it should get
down to months eventually.

On most linux systems, run the software as:

nohup ./rc5-client-linux-i586 -i debian@debian.org &

This will start the output to the file nohup.out - look at this file to see
the status of your site. Some OS versions of the rc5 binary don't support
the "-i" in this case, just run it without the "-i" but make sure
debian@debian.org is at the end (ie: nohup ./rc5-client-linux-aout
debian@debian.org). If you're using a Windows machine, then download the
DLL and the EXE file for win32. You can also test your machines speed
cracking by specifying the "-m" command.

This software will just use the unused CPU cycles of you computer - it only
takes 300k of memory and will most likely give you a load average of 1 for
the time you run it - if at all possible, leave it running indefinately and
check the statistics file at:

                http://zero.genx.net/stats.html

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at karl@debian.org .

Regards
