Is there such a file? If you telnet into a pop server, it will move the
mailbox /var/spool/mail/username to /var/spoll/pop/username.pop (and leave
a 0 Byte file in /var/spool/mail.
After quiting pop, it should be moved back.
You have to clean up a bit.
/var/spool/mail/username should hold the user's mail and there shouldn't
be a /var/spoll/pop/username.
Try again afterwards.

Here is what I got:
$ ls -ld /var/spool/mail
drwxrwsr-t 2 root mail 1024 Nov 26 18:34 /var/spool/mail
$ ls -ld /var/spool/mail/martinb
-rw------- 1 martinb mail 498272 Nov 26 22:55
/var/spool/mail/martinb
$ ls -ld /var/spool/pop
drwxrwsr-x 2 root mail 1024 Nov 26 18:34 /var/spool/pop
Ciao,
Martin
