Ah strange. What does 'cat /proc/sys/kernel/domainname' say?
If it's wrong, you can correct it by "echo correct.domain > proc/.../domainname".
That usually fixes it for me. Also, does reboting fix it for you?
Other than that, I have no clue.
(BTW, I think defaultdomain is from the debian NIS package. I used
to have that set incorrectly, and then the /etc/init.d/nis stuff made
my domain be wrong at boottime).

`head -c 4 /dev/random` may print 4-letter words (once every approx 4e8 tries).
