According to the very short help:
~$ /sbin/activate
usage: /sbin/activate device [ partition ]
i.e. /sbin/activate /dev/hda 2
it seems to set the bootable flag in the partition table, the example
above would make /dev/hda2 the bootable partition on your first IDE
hard disc.
