This is because SpeakFreely is compiled in full-duplex mode, and 99% of
the soundcard drivers under Linux are NOT full-duplex (IE you cannot send
data to the speaker and read data from the mic at the same time).
This is probably a bug in the speak-freely package. To get around it go
to www.fourmilab.ch and compile your own (half-duplex) version of
speak-freely.
