Problems with dependencies

I have the package e2compr_1.06-2 installed providing the package
e2fsprogs (replacing it).  If I now try to install a package (say mc)
depending on e2fsprogs (>=1.06-1) it tells me this package is not
installed even though it is provided by e2compr.

What happens here?
