It seems that debian was not really shutdown... maybe you pressed the
power switch while it's still trying to shut itself? try the command
"shutdown -r now" you could see visually that it has indeed shutdown
because it has rebooted.

I also have an adaptec 2940 UW, 2.0 Gb Seagate.
