installing into /usr/local ??

Maybe a stupid question, but how do I install packages into /usr/local if
I want to install the package for more than one computer into a NFS
mounted directory (like /usr/local).

for example the Ghostscript/Ghostview packages should go into /usr/local,
so I can NFS mount /usr/local on all machines in our network. So I have
to update only this one package not one on every machine. And I do not
have the space to install the package on each machine.

Is there a special procedure I have to follow for the Debian distrib. ?

Thanks for any advice !
