You could do that, of course. While you have the new one out, check all of
its interupt jumpers and see if one of them conflicts with the interupt
for your modem. This kind of "almost works" behavior is common when an
interupt is being used by two devices. I believe it's called "contention"
and results are somewhat unpredictable.
