How about a new function for dpkg ... SURE WOULD MAKE THINGS EASIER.

--replace

in other words:

dpkg --replace old-package new-package

or

dpks --replace smail exim

This would give a user an easy way to swap packages that provide the same
function.  If the two packages do not provide the same functions OR if the
new package provides only a subset of the old functions AND something
DEPENDS on one of the lost functions, it would fail.
