Kernel compilation errors

I have Debian 1.3 with kernel sources 2.0.30-6. I am trying to recompile
the kernel slim it down, add sound, etc. If I try `make zImage` or if I
try `make-kpkg --revision custom.1 kernel_image`, I get the same results.

Everything goes along fine, then, all of a sudden, these messages:

cpp: output pipe has been closed
gcc: Internal compiler error: program cc1 got fatal signal 6
make[5]: *** [floppy.o] Error 1
make[5]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/kernel-source.2.0.30/drivers/block'
*..etc...

What on earth is going on? I am really frustrated!
