This was a known bug in a version of cfdisk.  If you open a shell during 
the installation process and run fdisk manually instead, you can 
partition the drive such that the "can't seek" problem does not occur.  
This problem has only be reported in drives >2GB, AFAIK.  Note that the 
manual procedure I described comes from recollection.  I bypassed the 
problem on some 2.5GB drives by using 4 primary partitions and no 
extended partitions.  I believe it was a problem with extended partitions 
only.
