I had the same problem when trying an ftp install from a CD-ROM mounted on
my other computer.  The console on that computer showed a lot of read
errors. 

After the process halted, I restarted the install step of dselect and it
picked up where it had left off, successfully completing the installation.
You might try repeating the step to see if that helps.
