I have this line at the end of /etc/diald/diald.options:

impulse 86400,43200

It keeps my link up for a day (86400 seconds) then wacthes for half a
day for the link to go idle.

P.S. Having re-read the docs I think I should use:

impulse 86400,0,0

to keep it up always.
